Richard the Lionheart Tours

The Richard the Lionheart Tour is hosted, catered and accommodated from Plantagenet Manor and covers many historical sites where Richard the Lionheart, King of England and Duke of Aquitaine (1157-1199) fought wars for five years against the King of France, Philippe Auguste (Philippe 11) Richard met his death in 1199 while besieging Châlus-Chabrol. Plantagenet manor sits below Châlus-Chabrol which dominates the town of Châlus.

The Tour has limited numbers and runs every year in October for one week and is hosted by the owners of Plantagenet Manor, Robert and Liane Lancaster. Robert has always had a keen interest in history and has taken studies covering the Medieval period and in particular Richard the Lionheart. Robert was formally a member of the British and Australian military Special Forces and has a deep knowledge and understanding of military history and a warrior’s way of thinking.

SATURDAY DAY 1 – Arrive at Plantagenet Manor by car or Pick up from Limoges airport and or Limoges train station available on request. Tour of Plantagenet Manor and grounds and Briefing of the tour. Escorted tour of the ruins of Castle Châlus-Maulmont, then a walk and tour around Châlus-Cabrol. the castle where Richard was mortally wounded. The old Chapel of is said to house the entrails of Richard the Lionheart although these have never been found. Champagne, wine or beer and Petit fours in the lounge room. Dinner is then served in the dining room and entails a four course modern French inspired meal with fine wines and ends with freshly brewed coffee and liquors’.

SUNDAY DAY 2 – Continental Breakfast served in the dining room. Drive along the Richard the Lionheart Route to Castle Montbrun and have a private escorted tour of the castle which is said to have links to Richard the Lionheart. Set three course Lunch at the Inn opposite the entry of the castle situated by a river with a perfect location for photos of the castle. Drive to The Castle of Brie which is the home of the Count and Countess Pierre Du Manoir De Jauaye and have a private escorted tour. Then drive on to The Castle of Rochechouart for a private tour of the castle and the Modern Art Museum housed in the castle. Wine or Tea, coffee and biscuits provided. Free time on arrival at Plantagenet Manor. Champagne, wine or beer and Petit fours in the lounge room. Dinner served in the dining room and entails a four course modern French inspired meal with fine wines and ends with freshly brewed coffee and liquors’.

MONDAY DAY 3 - Continental Breakfast served in the dining room. Drive along the Richard the Lionheart Route to the ruins of the Castle of Les Cars. A quick view of the Museum which shows objects found at the site and a virtual tour of the original castle. Drive to the ruins of the Fortress of Lastours and have a guided tour. Drive to Nexon for a three course set lunch. After lunch a private tour of The Chateau of Nexon, then drive to and a private tour of The Abbey of the Chalard. Return to Plantagenet Manor. Champagne, wine or beer and Petit fours in the lounge room. Dinner served in the dining room and entails a four course modern French inspired meal with fine wines and ends with freshly brewed coffee and liquors’.

TUESDAY DAY 4 - Continental Breakfast served in the dining room. Drive along the Richard the Lionheart Route to The Castle of Jumilac for a private tour of the castle and grounds. Then drive to Segur Le Chateau and lovely Medieval city on a river with its remains of its castle looming over the area. Set three course lunch with wine in a local restaurant. Free time to explore the town and castle. Then drive to The Abby of Saint-Yriex-La-Perche for a private tour and visit to the Treasury. Return to Plantagenet Manor. Champagne, wine or beer and Petit fours in the lounge room. Dinner served in the dining room and entails a four course modern French inspired meal with fine wines and ends with freshly brewed coffee and liquors’.

WEDNESDAY DAY 5 – Continental Breakfast served in the dining room. Depart at 8 to drive to Fontenveu Abbey. Private guided tour of the Plantagenet Kings tombs, with Richard the Lionheart laying at the feet of his father Henry 11 and his mother Eleanor of Aquitaine. Set 3 course lunch in local restaurant. Visit two local Loire Wineries for some wine tasting. Drive back to Plantagenet Manor. Champagne, wine or beer and Petit fours in the lounge room from. Dinner served in the dining room and entails a four course modern French inspired meal with fine wines and ends with freshly brewed coffee and liquors’.

Free time and Discussions on the day and briefing for the following day

THURSDAY DAY 6 - Continental Breakfast served in the dining room. Drive to beautiful Beynac castle one of Richard the Lionheart’s castles on the river Dordogne, private tour of the castle, lunch by the River Dordogne. Private tour of Castelnuad Castle nearby with its great museum and huge medieval catapults. Drive to Sarlat via La Rouqe Gageac one of the most beautiful villages in France. Free time wandering around Sarlat, a town that has more listed monuments and buildings than anywhere else in France other than Paris.

FRIDAY DAY 7 – Free to explore the local area. Option for trip to Limoges the capital of the area renown around the world for its fine porcelen. Option to visit the many Bricontes in the area that sell wonderful antiques and bric a brac (these can be transported to the UK/Europe/Worldwide) Or Option of attending Ordour Sur Glane, a town whose population was wiped out by the SS in 1944 and left as it was on the order of President De Gaulle. A very haunting and moving experience.

Farwell dinner at an excellent restaurant with three course meal and wine.

SATURDAY 10 AM - Transport to Limoges Airport or train station available on request.
